Definitions

Here are some useful definitions for terms used in this blog that you may not be familiar with.

Blog – an online journal. Blogs take on a variety of forms and include strictly text versions, photo journals, or combinations of the two, as well as versions with embedded video and audio.

ILS – an abbreviation standing for Integrated Library System. These automated computer systems usually provide cataloging, circulation, and OPAC functions in one system. Often acquisitions and serials control modules can be included in an ILS.

Library 2.0 – simply refers to the use of Web 2.0 technology in libraries.

Open Source Software – software that allows users to customize the software code to meet their needs. Open source software is free of charge. Examples include OpenOffice and Evergreen ILS.

Social Networking – much as in real life, social networking involves establishing contacts with friends and friends of friends based on common interests. Social networking on the Internet allows a user to create an online presence and carry out these activities in a virtual environment using one of many social networking sites.

Tagging - also referred to as Social Bookmarking, allows users to create their own descriptors or tags and attach them to online content. Tags may be used for websites, articles, books, etc.

Web 2.0 – this term refers to the second generation of the Internet, in which dynamic applications came to the forefront allowing for more than just static web content. These new applications allow for everyday people to create web content and interact with others online.

Wiki – is a program that allows users to collaborate on web site content. Any user may create or edit site content including the contributions made by other users. The most famous wiki is of course, Wikipedia.

ALA Feels Broadband Stimulus Programs Need to Focus More on Libraries The ALA has filed comments with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Rural Utilities Service in regards to expanding broadband access through recent federal stimulus programs. The ALA feels that more money should be allocated towards the expansion and establishment of computer centers at public libraries. THe current allocated amount represents only 2.6 percent of requested funds from the program. In addition, the ALA feels that funds should be concentrated on providing high-capacity broadband connections to libraries, enabling them to act as anchor institutions in their communities. This would provide for greater access to a greater number of people than if the program focused on residential broadband access.
Overhauling the Universal Service Fund The FCC Chairman will try to overhaul the Universal Service Fund in order to support broadband communications. Previously the fund was used to subsidize phone service in rural areas and support networks in schools and libraries. The new overhaul would help to cover the expansion of broadband networks in rural areas. There is no mention of whether library support would continue under the new changes.
Libraries to the Rescue The Institute of Museum and Library Services has produced a series of podcasts dubbed "Libraries to the Rescue." The series consists of five 12-15 minute long podcasts focusing on a range of topics that include the importance of broadband access, accessing online employment resources and how to increase access to information through the use of virtual libraries. The podcasts may be played online or accessed through iTunes. A list of online resources from various states is also linked from the podcast page.
ALA’s Public Library Technology Study Shows Increased Demand, Insufficient Support Public libraries have seen a large increase in demand for computer and Internet services. A new report from the ALA shows that 81% of public libraries indicated they do not have enough computer workstations while 71% of public libraries are the only source of free Internet access in the community. Even in the face of this increased demand library budgets are being cut. This report advocates documenting computer services and usage and increasing community awareness of theses services in an effort to gain support for funding and additional technology.
Proposal to Provide Rural Kansas with Broadband Access More than 50 % of Kansans do not have broadband access access. A Wichita based company has submitted a proposal to use fixed wire less service to provide broadband access across the state at a cost of $756 per square mile. In comparison fiber optic technology would cost approximately $70,000 per square mile.
